Trade turnover of Russia and Turkey for the year decreased by 17% to $57 billion
At the end of 2023, trade between Russia and Turkey decreased by 17% compared to 2022, amounting to about $57 billion. This became known in February 2024 from the data of the Turkish statistical service.
According to the information provided, Russia's exports to Turkey reached $46 billion, while imports of Turkish goods to Russia amounted to $11 billion. Despite the general decline in trade turnover, the structure of trade between the two countries has retained its key features.
The main items of Russian exports to Turkey in 2023 were energy resources. Supplies of petroleum products are estimated at almost $11 billion. Pipeline natural gas, according to the International Energy Agency, was exported worth about $7.6 billion. In addition, iron and steel ($3.1 billion), coal ($2.9 billion), and wheat ($2.4 billion) took a significant share in exports.
In turn, Turkey supplied mainly agricultural and mechanical engineering products to Russia. The leading position in Turkish exports was taken by citrus fruits, the volume of supplies of which reached $426 million. Auto parts ($404 million) and trailers ($275 million) also accounted for a significant share.
In addition, copper ($1.7 billion) and aluminum ($1.3 billion) took a noticeable place in the structure of Russian exports to Turkey. Other significant Turkish exports to Russia include oil oils ($227 million), stone fruits such as apricots, plums and cherries ($226 million), and fish ($220 million).
It is worth noting that Turkey does not officially disclose data on gas and oil purchases. However, based on information from the International Energy Agency and Turkish statistics, in 2023 Turkey acquired hydrocarbons from Russia, mainly oil and LNG, worth about $6.85 billion, in addition to the already mentioned pipeline gas supplies.[1]

At the end of 2023, Russia retained the position of the largest exporter of agricultural products to Turkey. This was announced in April 2024 at the Agroexport federal center, whose analysts refer to the ITC Trade Map service.
In 2023, Turkey purchased products of the agro-industrial complex abroad for more than $24 billion. Almost 22% came from supplies from Russia. The share of Ukraine (second place among the largest agro-industrial complex exporters) was 13%, the share of Brazil - 9%.

Earlier, Agroexport predicted that the potential for an increase in the supply of agricultural products from Russia to Turkey by 2030 would exceed $4 billion. The key products can be cereals (corn, barley, wheat), leguminous vegetables (dried lentils, beans, chickpeas). The products of deep processing, in particular, baby food, which is in demand on the Turkish market, but practically not supplied from Russia, also have high potential, according to the center.
Traditionally, Russia is for Turkey the main supplier of sunflower oil and raw materials for its production. The introduction of duties on the export of sunflower from Russia forced Turkey to increase purchases of sunflower oil: if earlier oil was imported mainly for re-export, and sunflower seeds - for processing and use on the domestic market, now oil is being purchased for re-export and for the domestic market, - explained independent expert Ilya Ilyushin, to whom Agroexport refers[2] |
