2021: Global Data Center UPS Market Valued at $5.72 Billion

On May 31, 2022, P&S Intelligence analysts published a study according to which the size of the uninterruptible power supply (UPS) market for data centers reached $5.72 billion in 2021. Sales of such equipment will grow by 6.5% per year and will exceed $10 billion by 2030, experts expect.

The main factor in the growth of the market is the creation of new data centers, as the need for data storage is growing sharply around the world, mainly in order to offer solutions for Big Data (Big Data). As UPS systems protect data centers from power surges and outages, the need for them is growing.

A sharp power outage and even a voltage drop can disrupt the data center, causing data loss, file damage, and hardware malfunctions. Enterprises and industries with high-density cloud computing are highly data center dependent and unable to afford data loss, so they are committed to providing reliable power to protect them.

Up to 500 kVA UPS demand will grow at the fastest rate (about 8%) in the UPS data center market in subsequent years. This will be due to their widespread use in data centers of small and large organizations to provide short-term backup power in case of power outages or voltage fluctuations, according to a report dated May 31, 2022.

Level III category had the highest income - about $3 billion - in 2021. In the short term, this trend is likely to continue as most data centers are built to Tier III standards and they are widely used by companies of all sizes.

The IT sector is the main end user of UPS for data centers, and in the coming years it will also show the highest growth rates. Computer data is central to the IT industry, so efficient data storage is paramount to it.

In 2021, North America had the largest share of UPS data center revenue. This is due to the presence of large electrical companies, such as, and Eaton Corporation ABB , Schneider Electric as well as IT giants, including,,, and Google. Microsoft Facebook Apple Amazon

The Asia-Pacific market is likely to have the fastest growth in the near future. This has been attributed to increasing investment, increasing data warehousing, and an increasing proliferation of public and hybrid clouds among many authorities.

The main driver of the market is a sharp increase in the number of blackouts and voltage surges. In twenty years, the frequency of blackouts has doubled, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. The Energy Department also notes that 2020 saw an average of more than eight hours of power outages, which also affected data center operations.

In addition, according to the International Energy Agency, in the period from 2015 to 2020, the global volume of data center traffic quadrupled. Technologies such as IoT, machine learning, artificial intelligence and robotic technology produce a significant amount of data that must be stored and processed. This leads to increased investment in this area, especially in the construction of new data centers to provide cloud services.

About 60% of global data center construction companies such as Digital Realty, Equinix, Coresite, Amazon Web Services, Verizon and Cyxtera Technologies are based in the United States. Therefore, this country is one of the largest investors in the UPS market for data centers. Among data center companies in the United States, one has more than 235 centers around the world.[1]

2018:6% market growth to $8.2 billion - IHS Markit

The volume of the global uninterruptible power supply (UPS) market in 2018 reached $8.2 billion, an increase of 6% compared to 2017. This is evidenced by data from analysts at IHS Markit, released in November 2019.

Asia in 2018 turned out to be the fastest growing UPS market, showing a 9.2% rise. In the EMEA region (Europe, Middle East, Africa), sales increased by 5.2%, in the Americas - by 3.4%.

For the UPS equipment market, 2018 was one of the best in almost 10 years, says Lucas Beran, lead analyst at IHS Markit. - This momentum continued in the first half of 2019, when the deployment of data centers for cloud and colocation services will continue in tandem with projects in the field of peripheral computing.

Data centers are beginning to move to computing to support traffic and provide local processing by reducing response time and increasing autonomy at the periphery.

Data centers for peripheral computing are often modular systems. They have relatively modest computational capabilities, but are cheaper than hyperscale objects and consume less electricity. Peripheral computing further reduces processing and transmission costs by having its source closer than traditional data centers.

IHS Markit notes that peripheral computing has a positive impact on the growth of the UPS market as the deployment of enterprise equipment on the periphery gains momentum for retail and healthcare.

Analysts predict that global UPS sales will exceed $10 billion by 2023 thanks to the growing proliferation of peripheral computing, large investments in data centers around the world and the market's transition to lithium-ion batteries instead of traditional lead-acid device options.

Changes in UPS Market Volume, IHS Markit Data

In 2018, operators of hyperscale data centers, including Amazon, Apple, Google, Facebook and Microsoft, broke the record for capital spending, spending about $120 billion. Such a large investment and equipping of data centers with products such as UPS continues in 2019 with similar prospects for the coming years.

In addition, the world's largest colocation service providers, including Digital Realty and Equinix, are actively investing in expanding their data center networks. It was such companies, as well as cloud providers, that in 2018 increased UPS spending at the fastest pace - dynamics were measured by more than 10% compared to 2017.

According to experts, sales of single-phase UPS on a global scale increased by 4% in 2018 compared to 2017. In the segment of three-phase solutions, the implementation rose by almost 8%.

Three-phase UPS, as a rule, are used to supply loads with power from 10 kVA. They are in demand in almost all professional areas: data centers, industry, infrastructure facilities, centralized power supply to office buildings, etc.

Another growth driver for the three-phase UPS segment in Asia was the progressive development of the HoReCa industry: equipment for modern hotels is too expensive and too demanding on the quality of power supply to neglect its reliable protection. In Europe, according to Global Market Insights, the trend towards reindustrialization, which has emerged against the backdrop of protracted trade wars on a global scale, has a stimulating effect on this segment.

Industrial UPS Segment Data, IHS Markit Data

In late 2016, UPS manufacturers began offering equipment equipped with lithium-ion batteries, the report said. In 2018, such equipment began to be used much more often in data centers, despite its shortage. In 2018, the volume of installed UPSs with lithium-ion batteries exceeded 200 megawatt hours, mainly due to North American cloud providers and colocation service providers.

The trend towards use in the lithium-ion battery market in 2019 is accelerating, extending to corporate users, UPS systems ranging from 100 to 500 kVA and even some rack UPSs with a capacity of about 10 kVA, says Lucas Beran. - Geographically, the spread of lithium-ion batteries is also increasing in Asia and, to a lesser extent, in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

As the use of lithium-ion batteries in data centers grows, analysts say the benefits of the technology will allow operators and executives to automatically use energy for peak loads and generate revenue through energy services.

As for the largest manufacturers of information security, IHS Markit includes APC by Schneider Electric, Eaton and Vertiv. These vendors accounted for approximately 46% of revenue in the market in 2018.

Huawei, Vertiv and Delta managed to increase market shares, while Schneider Electric and Legrand saw their performance decline.

According to experts, having begun to master the newly erected and equipped data centers and other large facilities, customers naturally began to reduce purchases of new equipment - including three-phase UPSs of high power. Consumer demand for uninterruptible power supplies, by the way, also experienced a decline: incomes of the population have hardly grown lately.[2]
