WebCrawler

WebCrawler is the oldest full text search system. This search engine was written in 1994 Pinkerton Brian, the student of the university of Washington who sold it on June 1, 1995 to the well-known company America Online (AOL). It could apply enough efforts, time, money to fill its base with millions of links. However today Webcrawler is not any more the property of AOL as a system was purchased by Excite. The Webcrawler system is widely known among veterans of the Internet, especially in America.

Webcrawler performs search not only in WWW, it is the interface to search of Gopher and search in FTP. The interface at Webcrawler very simple and clear. It resembles Excite. In addition to a data entry field of a request are present at the main page: the list of channels (directory headings), four buttons for receiving the help, sending E-Mail etc. and also several "daily news". The directory at Webcrawler on structure is similar to the directory on Excite, though has more sections, there is also similar Excite a possibility of setup, creation of "the channel" where only the news interesting the user, etc. will be displaid. A system supports not only requests with a full range of logical actions over words, but also natural language queries. The volume of the index one Webcrawler smaller than at other considered systems, however, on simple requests of Webcrawler issues much more relevant results, than, for example, Altavista. By drawing up a request for Webcrawler it is necessary to remember that by default he uses logical operator of ILI, i.e. the request Maxim Frei is interpreted as "Maxim ILI Frei" - at the page there has to be at least one of these words. Though documents at which there are both words appear the first, such approach reduces relevance of results. Search results on Webcrawler are by default issued in very compact form - only the page heading which is a hyperlink to it and percent of relevance is displaid. To change a type of an output of results, it is necessary to pass to the separate page, this transaction should be repeated after each search. If pages from the directory meet a search criterion, then near the link to a page the link "overview" ("review") appears. Besides, in the right part of search results page several icons are displaid, having clicked which, it is possible to look for a key word in the database of books, to browse the card (if the place name was mentioned), etc. For those who did not find necessary information at the very bottom of the page there is a link "Look for on Excite" ("Search on Excite"). Search of the Russian resources on Webcrawler is theoretically possible, but the number of the indexed pages so are not enough that there is an impression that they got by chance there.
