Excite is a set of the Internet resources and services belonging to IAC Search & Media company which is subsidiary company of InterActiveCorp corporation. The website is started in 1994. For November, 2019 the online service includes: the search system, web mail, instant messaging, stock quotations, and the home page configured by the user.

History

2016: 10232 place on attendance

According to the statistics of Alexa Internet, in June-July, 2016 Excite takes 10232 place on attendance of websites on the Internet, and about 30% of visits consist of viewing only one page.

1999

Acquisition by @Home Network provider

On May 28, 1999 Excite was purchased internet-provider @Home Network. As a result the website replaced the name with Excite @Home.

Failure from purchase of Google for $1 million

In 1999 two graduate students from Stanford University, Sergej Brin and Larry Page came to the management of Excite and suggested to purchase the Google search engine which is recently developed by them for $1 million, but managers of Excite rejected this offer. Failure of Excite from acquisition of Google was called afterwards one of the largest mistakes which were ever made in the digital industry.

1998: Negotiations with Yahoo on Excite purchase

In December, 1998 the Yahoo company participated in negotiations on purchase of Excite for $5.5-6 billion, but the transaction did not take place.

1997: The second most popular website on the Internet

In the 1990s Excite was one of the most recognizable brands on the Internet: in 1997 it was noted as the second most popular website on the Internet (after GeoCities). Further the popularity of the website decreased, so during the period from 1999 to 2001 the website was already the fifth most popular.

1996

IPO

On April 4, 1996 Excite announced primary placement of two million actions.

Merger of Magellan and WebCrawler

Also in 1996 the company absorbed search systems Magellan and WebCrawler.

George Bell is the CEO of Excite

In January, 1996 George Bell joined the Excite command as the CEO.

1994: Formation of service

Excite was founded in 1994 by Graham Spencer, Joe Kraus, Mark Van Haren, Ryan Makintayr, Ben Luch and Martin Reynfrid, all of them then were students of Stanford University.
