2025: Scandal after patient deaths and injuries
Plastic clinic "Abriell" in St. Petersburg was at the center of a criminal investigation after deaths and severe injuries of patients. Information about numerous violations in her work was published on March 5, 2025. The investigation is under the personal control of the Chairman of the Investigative Committee Alexander Bastrykin and the General Prosecutor's Office.
One of the most resonant cases was a fatal complication after extensive liposuction and body tightening in a 47-year-old woman. She underwent more than 30 operations at the same time, which lasted over eight hours. When the patient's condition began to deteriorate critically, the owner of the clinic and the chief physician Maria Burlova prevented her hospitalization, which led to a tragic outcome.
During the investigation, many other cases of negligence and incompetence on the part of the medical staff of Abriell were revealed. Some patients received irreversible injuries: one completely lost his vision, the other lost the sensitivity of the hand. After the death of the patient, the clinic management tried to destroy the videos and forge medical documents to hide the consequences of their actions.
According to the publication, despite the revealed violations, the clinic continued to function for a long time. Roszdravnadzor of St. Petersburg for a year and a half did not take decisive action to suspend the activities of Abriell. The first audit of the regulator, carried out in August 2024, ended only with an order to eliminate violations. A second audit in November confirmed that the violations had not been eliminated, but there were no serious sanctions. Only in February 2025, the department filed a lawsuit to revoke the license from the clinic.[1]
