2023: Arrest after patient dies from liposuction
At the end of November 2023, the Vasileostrovsky District Court of St. Petersburg ruled to choose a preventive measure against Maria Burlova, chief physician of the Abriell private clinic for plastic surgery and cosmetology. She is accused under paragraph "in" part 2 of article 238 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation - the provision of services of improper quality, resulting in the death of a person.
The incident occurred in September 2023. Anna Fedorova, a 47-year-old resident of St. Petersburg, turned to the Abriell clinic, who decided to correct her face oval. However, it subsequently turned out that a huge number of other medical services were imposed on the woman, including liposuction, endoscopic lifting and bodylift. In particular, in one day she underwent about 30 procedures; the patient spent more than eight hours under anesthesia. Initially, the cost of the operation was supposed to be about 300 thousand rubles, but in the end the clinic billed more than 2.5 million rubles, in connection with which the woman had to borrow money.
After all the procedures, Fedorova's condition began to deteriorate sharply. She was taken to the Nikiforov Center for Emergency and Radiation Medicine, where she died on the night of September 9, 2023, without regaining consciousness. The investigation believes that the woman's death occurred "through negligence due to improper provision of medical services by the clinic staff that do not meet the safety requirements of the patient's life." According to preliminary data, the cause of death was a heart attack and swelling of the brain.
The court chose a preventive measure for Burlova in the form of house arrest. The suspect does not admit her guilt as of the end of November 2023. After the tragic incident, several more patients of the Abriell clinic said they were dissatisfied with the quality of the services provided and their appearance after operations.[1]
