According to SiliconAngle, the cyber attack on Advantech occurred on November 19, 2020. Attackers used the Conti ransomware. Hackers offered the company a complete decryption of the data and promised to remove the stolen data in the event of payment of the ransom. Otherwise, extortionists threaten to publish the stolen data freely. Cybercriminals also promised that after paying the ransom, all backdoors will be removed, which have already been deployed on the Avenech internal network and advice on improving the operation of the information security system in order to prevent similar incidents in the future. Hackers also agreed to decrypt several files for free as confirmation that their decryptor really works.
Advantech did not pay hackers anything and on November 26, hackers published on the Internet an archive of the company's data, the size of which was 3 GB of the Advantech data archive. Attackers claim that the published part is only 2% of the total volume of stolen data.
On the day part of the data was published, Advantech confirmed the attack and said that some of its servers were affected, but recovery attempts are ongoing. The company said its systems are working normally, and this has not affected orders, production and shipping.
