2022: Solar Power Plant Launch

On October 18, 2022, the official commissioning ceremony of Qatar's largest solar power plant took place: a farm called Al-Kharsaah Solar PV Power Plant (KSPP) provides up to 800 MW of power.

KSPP is a joint project of Qatar's QatarEnergy Renewable Solutions (60%), Japan's Marubeni Corporation (20.4%) and France's TotalEnergies (19.6%). The power station covers an area of approximately 10 square kilometres, equivalent to approximately 1,400 football pitches.

In total, more than 1.8 million highly efficient solar panels are involved. Sun position tracking technology maximizes power generation. Special robotic manipulators in the dark provide cleaning of modules to achieve high efficiency: water prepared in a special way is used to eliminate pollution.

The giant power station is located in the Al Harsaa region, about 80 km west of the capital Doha. This area was chosen after detailed scientific research, taking into account the best operational efficiency and maximum economic return.

During the first phase of construction (with a capacity of 400 MW), the KSPP station began generating electricity in June 2021. Now the site has reached full design capacity. The solar farm is expected to provide up to 10% of the country's peak energy consumption. At the same time, carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere will decrease by about 1 million tons per year.[1]
