Former British employee sued $3 million from the bank for discrimination
In January 2022, a former employee of the French bank BNP Paribas, 50-year-old Briton Stacey Macken, sued her ex-employer for $3 million in compensation for humiliation. She was underpaid, abused and once left on her desktop a witch's hat.
Macken began working for BNP Paribas in 2013. She was hired, promising to pay 120,000 pounds ($161,300 at the current rate) per year. The previous specialist who took Macken's place was a man and received 160,000 pounds ($215,000) annually, but at the time of hiring the woman, no one reported this. Already during her work, one of her managers disliked the employee. He so often dismissed her questions and suggestions that the words "Not now, Stacey" became one of the winged expressions in the team. Other men often disrespected a female colleague, too.
Once before the Halloween celebration, they left a black pointed hat at Macken's workplace.
"Stacey was clearly upset and admitted to me that she was very uncomfortable working with these male colleagues, knowing that one of them made every effort to leave the witch's hat on her table," assistant Macken said at the trial.
The court ruled that the appearance of the hat on the table was "essentially a sexist act," and the constant use of "Not Now, Stacey" was found to be a "humiliating comment."
The amount of compensation for gender discrimination has become one of the largest in the history of the British court. It could have been much smaller, but for several years, while the proceedings lasted, the bank's management never admitted that it humiliated Macken, and did not apologize to her.
