2021: Government Gas Loans

In December 2021, Turkey's budget reached a record deficit, and the government spent an unprecedented amount on gas imports amid rising world prices and the collapse of the lira.

Botas in the last month of 2021 alone received 59 billion lire ($4.4 billion) from the government in the form of loans and transfers. In 2020, there were no such transfers from the budget. On January 17, 2022, the Turkish government reported that the budget deficit for December more than tripled in annual terms and amounted to 145.7 billion lire due to gas import costs. Thus, the total deficit for 2021 will be 192.2 billion lire.
