2021: Launch of the Center for Quantum Computing Research

2020: Apple and Broadcom to pay Caltech $1.1 billion to steal technology

At the end of January 2020, a Los Angeles court ruled that Apple and Broadcom would have to pay the California University of Technology (Caltech) a total of $1.1 billion for violating the rights to several patents owned by the educational institution.

Apple was ordered to pay Caltech about $837 million, and Broadcom - $270 million. The university praised the "thoughtful attention of the jury" and expressed satisfaction with the recognition of the violation of patent rights by companies.

Los Angeles ruled that Apple and Broadcom will have to pay California Tech University $1.1 billion

According to Bloomberg, this is the sixth largest compensation in terms of payment, of which it has ever been awarded in such claims.

Caltech's demands against Apple are based solely on the use of allegedly patent-violating Broadcom chips in iPhone, Mac and other Apple devices that support 802.11n or 802.11ac, Broadcom produces chips for which charges have been made, while Apple is simply an indirect party whose products include these chips. Accordingly, Caltech's claims against Apple depend on the establishment that Broadcom chips do violate patents, Apple said.

In court, Apple stated that it was not involved in this, because, like many other manufacturers, it purchased finished products.

Broadcom is a major supplier of chips for Apple equipment. In fiscal 2019, Apple's orders brought the semiconductor manufacturer about one fifth of revenue.[1]
