Authorities explain death of 13 IVL patients overnight in hospital

At the end of November 2020, the official cause of death of 13 patients who were on artificial lung ventilation (IVL) in the infectious diseases hospital at the city hospital No. 20 of Rostov-on-Don became known.

Journalist Ekaterina Gordon on her Instagram page published an official response to a request to the presidential administration of Russia. The letter says that patients died due to old age, a high degree of lung damage and concomitant chronic diseases.

The authorities of Rostov-on-Don explained the death of 13 patients on mechanical ventilation per night in a local hospital

8 of the 13 patients who died were at risk: they were over 65 years old. At the same time, the average age of the dead from this category is 81 years. In addition, 12 out of 13 patients had extensive lung involvement - more than 80%. The investigation into this case has not yet been completed, the document says.

The media reported that patients in the Rostov hospital died on the night of October 12 due to interruptions in the supply of oxygen. In this regard, the Investigative Committee opened a criminal case under the article on causing death by negligence to two or more persons (part 3 of article 109 of the Criminal Code).

The presidential administration, as reported in a letter to Ekaterina Gordon, appealed for information to the government of the Rostov region. They reported that all the deceased medical care was provided in full. An inspection at the hospital revealed defects in filling out the documentation, but "facts about a violation of the oxygen transmission system" were not reflected there. The hospital administrator on duty did not report any interruptions with mechanical ventilation on the night of the incident.

Arthur Toporov, an anesthesiologist-resuscitator who told reporters about the interruptions in his department, soon resigned from the hospital. The deputy of the Rostov City Duma Pyotr Pyatibratov said that the leadership of GB No. 20 put pressure on the doctor; he himself attributed the departure to "other job offers." Following him, five more doctors left the hospital^[1]
