+ ITMO University (St. Petersburg National Research University of Information Technologies, Optics Mechanics)

On December 2, 2015 agreement signature about combined actions on development of quantum communications and other technologies on the quantum principles took place. The ITMO University acted as the initiator of creation of profile consortium and the organizer of the event. Agreement parties is the universities, research centers, the innovative companies and non-profit associations interested in joint development of quantum technologies.

Quantum communications are methods of information transfer using the technologies based on the principles of quantum physics. Here methods of line protection of communication by means of a quantum cryptography, transfer of quantum statuses on distance (quantum teleportation), superdense data coding, etc. enter. Development of quantum communications will allow to bring the existing telecommunication technologies to essentially new level. For example, using the quantum phenomena, it is possible to design unprecedentedly secure channel of communication which cracking will contradict laws of physics. The Russian projects partly even advance world achievements in this direction – so, developments of the small innovation enterprise based on the ITMO University "Quantum communications" in the field of cryptography exceed the available foreign analogs as on the range of the protected connection (over 300 km), and on resistance to cracking.

The created consortium will work on formation of the Russian infrastructure of quantum communications and calculations, to develop standards and protocols for operation of devices on the quantum principles and also to investigate methods of integration of quantum information science into already existing communication network. In addition, the working group will create the consolidated road map on development of the Russian quantum technologies, and in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kazan and Oryol pilot projects on development of quantum infrastructure will be started. Besides, development of quantum infrastructure will actively progress within the National technology initiative.

"Not all the countries realized the scale and potential advantage of implementation in infrastructure of quantum technologies, but the largest states of the world already decided on support of this direction: The USA, Australia, China for the last few years started the programs in this area. Mezhatsionalny corporations began to make investments in quantum communications and calculations too, began to create the laboratories. In the nearest future infrastructure will change, but there is no final image and understanding of a form of a system of quantum communications in the world meanwhile, – Dmitry Khan, the analyst of the Center of scientific and technical Foresight of the ITMO University tells. – The Russian developments in the field of quantum technologies are at high world level, we lag behind in the organizational plan – dialogue about the general image of quantum communications was not conducted yet. From there is a communication problem with corporations, state bodies that slows down development of technologies a little. Agreement signature is intended to bring our work to higher level".
