Cyanogen is the American company which created alternative to Android firmware for mobile devices. There are two versions of a firmware — CyanogenMod and Cyanogen OS. CyanogenMod is developed and issued independent community with assistance of Cyanogen company. Cyanogen OS is the "commercial" version of CyanogenMod which Cyanogen suggests to preset to producers of devices.
CyanogenMod sushchestut for more than 400 models of mobile devices. Mainly it is smartphones, but also tablets meet. The number of devices with Cyanogen OS much less is also calculated by about one ten though the difference here generally is in the scheme of distribution and licensing — for the end user of differences in functionality and frequency there are no updates.
2016
Cyanogen stops support of commercial Mobile OS of Cyanogen OS
On December 31, 2016 all services of a system and the supported night assemblies will stop work. The company reported about it in the official statement. Any instructions for owners of the smartphones OnePlus, Wileyfox, ZUK and others where Cyanogen OS is set, did not arrive[1] yet[2].
Developers of the non-commercial mobile platform CyanogenMod on which Cyanogen OS is based, noted on the website cyanogenmod.org that actions of the company will kill at the same time and their platform. In spite of the fact that CyanogenMod is the project, separate of Cyanogen OS, it is dependent on infrastructure and resources of the company. After the publication of developers DNS access to the website cyanogenmod.org was blocked.
The open code CyanogenMod will be still available to those who wish to create own OS on its basis.
Cyanogen deceived investors
Cyanogen deceived the investors, analysts and users monitoring its progress, having reported more than twice the overestimated digit of number of users of the firmware. The document prepared by two top managers of Cyanogen for Board of Directors in March, 2016 was at the disposal of The Information. In it it is told that about 25 million people use a firmware. It is twice less than number in 50 million users which in 2015 was given by the CEO of Cyanogen Kirt McMaster. In 2014 he sounded digit in 20 million users[3].
At the end of July, 2016 there was information that Cyanogen is going to cut down 20% of the staff or about 30 of 136 people. Information was given by the ReCode edition. The company did not announce it. According to a resource, dismissals are planned in division which is engaged in development of the commercial version of a firmware — Cyanogen OS[4].
2015
The popularity of Cyanogen began to grow after an exit of this firmware on "the murderer of leaders" of 2015 of OnePlus One. After that the number of devices with Cyanogen OS began to grow. For example, this firmware is in pure form used in the Zuk smartphones, a subbrand of Lenovo.
2014
In 2014 Cyanogen signed the agreement on exclusive distribution of Cyanogen-devices in India with the Indian company Micromax. As a result of OnePlus for which the market of India is a tidbit refused a firmware of Cyanogen and developed own Android firmware OxygenOS. The second office of the company, OnePlus 2, left already with it.
