History
2023
ARM LLC bought Decathlon business in Russia
The Government Commission for Control over Foreign Investment approved the sale of Decathlon's Russian business. The buyer of the assets was the Russian ARM LLC, which, among other things, sells fashion and owns the Mango franchise. This was announced on July 21, 2023 at the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
According to the deputy head of the department Viktor Yevtukhov, the ARM pledged to open 35 stores of the network and provide about 1.4 thousand jobs. Also, the Decathlon warehouse entered the deal perimeter. In the spring of 2022, there were 57 Decathlon stores in Russia, by January 2023 there were 28 of them left.
The manufacturer and seller of sports goods Decathlon has suspended work in the Russian Federation, explaining this by the sanctions imposed by Western countries. On May 30, 2023, Vedomosti sources reported that negotiations on the purchase of Decathlon's Russian assets were being conducted by the Turkish FLO Retailing and the Lebanese Azadea Group. According to the newspaper, potential buyers considered two options for the deal: buy the entire chain and restart stores according to the franchise model or do the same, but with the closure of several points.
Mikhail Burmistrov, General Director of Infoline Analytics, believes that the cost of rights to long-term lease of Decathlon premises can be 3-4 billion rubles. Mikael Ghazaryan, head of the capital markets and investments department at IBC Real Estate, estimated the property portfolio at 8-10 billion rubles.
In mid-June 2023, Viktor Yevtukhov announced that Decathlon was looking for a buyer for the company's business in Russia, and the deal could soon be submitted to a government commission.
We did not allow either Decathlon or any other foreign company that decided to leave - to sell the business in parts and get the full value of assets bypassing the law, "Yevtukhov emphasized.[1] |
Plan for the sale of assets in Russia
The French retailer of sports goods Decathlon decided to sell all its assets in Russia and separately - real estate (at least 135 thousand sq. M.), RBC reported in January 2023.
2022

Suspension of activities in Russia
At the end of March 2022, Decathlon announced the suspension of activities in Russia. In the Russian Federation, 2500 people worked in the Decathlon chain of stores at that time.
Carefully observing international sanctions, Decathlon notes that the supply conditions are no longer met to continue activities in Russia. Decathlon must suspend its stores... We will continue to support our 2.5 thousand Russian employees, some of whom have been working for the company since 2006, the retailer said in a statement. |
The company also reported that 125 employees helped to leave Ukraine, who "took advantage of the solidarity of colleagues in neighboring countries" and help in finding housing. Some Decathlon employees posted colleagues from Ukraine at home or helped them with "administrative procedures."
Decathlon is owned by the Mulliez Family Association, which also owns Auchan and Leroy Merlin. They said that they continue their activities in the Russian Federation. By April 13, 2022, they really retain work in the Russian market.[2]
2020: Data from tens of millions of customers found themselves in the public domain
In February 2020, security researchers from VPNmentor discovered that the data of more than 123 million Decathlon clients were in the public domain due to an unprotected ElasticSearch server.
Specialists cyber security found the database on February 12 and notified the company after a brief investigation four days later. Decathlon disabled the vulnerable server shortly after receiving the notification. Among the open data on the server were unencrypted emails and customer passwords, logs, API comprehensive personal information about employees, including contract information, dates of birth, and much more. Decathlon quickly responded to the notice by closing public access on Feb. 17, VPNmentor said.
Decathlon's personal data leaks are just one of the latest in a long line of major incidents involving incorrect security settings. Usually, databases with minimal or no access protection are in the public domain. A recent McAfee study found that 99% of IaaS configuration errors initially go unnoticed.
Censornet CEO Ed McNair said:
The scale of these leaks worries not only Decathlon, but also its employees and customers who are at risk. The details presented included important personal information, such as Social Security numbers, full names and addresses, meaning they provide cybercriminals with all the data they need for a personalized attack. |
McNair also added that as cloud technology is increasingly used, companies will have to realize that its application is associated with various security issues and requires a special approach.
Companies of all sizes must take responsibility for stored data, and use proven security technologies, he added.[3] |
