Launch of production of test strips for glucometers

In Russia, they began to produce test strips for glucometers, the degree of localization of which reached 95%. This became known in early September 2024. Production is carried out by Diakont at the KorolevPharm plant in the Moscow region. The new project, launched in 2023, involves the release of full-cycle test strips and glucometers, which was made possible by the installation of modern equipment that meets international standards.

The development of the technological process was carried out together with scientists from Moscow State University and the Pushchinsky Scientific Center for Biological Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences. This project is part of a large-scale import substitution program for medical devices. Diakont has received state accreditation and a certificate of origin for its products, which confirms the high level of localization and compliance of products with the requirements of Russian law. Currently, the production facilities of the plant allow the production of up to 15 million packages of test strips annually.

The general director of the company "Diakont" Peter Shishko noted that the main goal of the enterprise is maximum import substitution. According to him, the company carried out a large-scale reorganization, which made it possible not only to produce the final product, but also to establish the production of raw materials for its manufacture, which was previously impossible in Russia. The company also plans to produce insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitoring sensors equipped with software with self-learning elements.

The test strip production project was divided into several stages. At the first stage, which ended in 2023, the company began producing test strips using materials that had not previously been produced in Russia. More than ₽1 billion were invested in the development of the plant. In the next stage, it is planned to expand the production line by producing other medical devices necessary for patients with diabetes mellitus.^[1]

Start-up of insulin pumps and glucose monitoring sensors

In early September 2024, it became known that in the Moscow region, the Diakont company completed a project to launch the production of insulin pumps and glucose monitoring sensors. The production line was opened at the KorolevPharm plant in Korolev, and the total investment in the construction and modernization of the enterprise amounted to about ₽1 billion. This project has become part of the import substitution program in the field of medical technologies and is aimed at creating a full cycle of production of vital medical devices in Russia.

The launch of production facilities was carried out despite delays caused by sanctions restrictions. As of September 2024, the plant has already passed state accreditation and received all the necessary certificates for production. The localization of Diakont products in Russia reached 95%, which is an important step in ensuring the country's independence from foreign supplies of medical devices.

One of the key products that will be produced at the factory are insulin pumps - devices for the automatic administration of insulin to patients with diabetes mellitus. The production of such pumps in the world is limited, and Russia is taking an important step in ensuring its own production of these complex medical devices. In addition to the pumps, the plant will launch continuous glucose monitoring (NMG) sensors to help patients monitor their blood sugar levels in real time.

Diakont CEO Petr Shishko stressed that equipment for pumps and sensors will be equipped with software with self-learning elements. This innovative solution will improve the accuracy and reliability of the devices, which is especially important for patients with chronic diseases.

Our goal is maximum import substitution and complete localization of the production process, - said Shishko, adding that a large-scale reorganization of the enterprise was carried out, which allows not only to produce final products, but also to produce raw materials for its manufacture.[2]

2022: Test Strip Production Launch

On October 24, 2022, it became known about the launch by Diakont of the production of test strips, glucose meters, glucose sensors and insulin pumps for monitoring blood sugar levels intended for patients with diabetes mellitus. Investments in the project are estimated at 1 billion rubles, it is being implemented with the assistance of the Moscow Region Development Corporation (KRMO).

The project will be divided into several stages. The first of them involves the launch of the production of test strips, the second - the launch of a workshop for the production of glucose meters, sensors of glucose biosensors and insulin pumps. The new production will be equipped with modern high-tech equipment, which will allow the production of up to 300 million packages of products per year, said Ekaterina Zinovieva, Deputy Prime Minister - Minister of Investment, Industry and Science of the Moscow Region.

The production of medical devices for diabetics is being launched in the Moscow region

The founders of the company, together with employees of the Department of Moscow State University and the Pushchinsky Scientific Center for Biological Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences, developed a method for determining glucose, which formed the basis for the creation of test strips and glucometers designed to determine blood sugar levels in 2003.

In parallel with the launch of the production of test strips, Diakont organizes at the enterprise the production of raw materials for its products - graphite paste and biosynthesis of glucose oxidase and glucose enzymes - dehydrogenase. For this, a special laboratory is equipped at the enterprise. Test strips will be produced in a Class 7 clean room in accordance with ISO 13485. For the production of glucose sensors and insulin pumps - electronic-mechanical devices that continuously supply insulin from a special reservoir to subcutaneous fat tissue, a separate workshop will be built.

Our company has always had a small production in Russia and the main enterprise in Southeast Asia, where we produce more than 750 million packages of products per year. Now we have decided to make a complete localization in Russia. The very process of production of test strips in recent years has stepped forward. It is not difficult to launch such production, but the only question is that all our competitors use imported materials in 99%, "said Peter Shishko, General Director of Diakont.[3]

The release medical devices will be launched on the territory of the urban district Queens in January 2023. At the first stage, about 20 jobs will be created at the enterprise, in the future the company plans to increase the staff to 500 people. The small production of the Diakont company is already operating in Korolev in October 2022 and produces up to 15 thousand packages of finished products per year.
