History
2024: Agreement on the opening of Euronews representative office in Kazakhstan
During a working trip to Brussels in August 2024, the Minister of Culture and Information of Kazakhstan Aida Balaeva met with the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Euronews Pedro Vargas David. The parties agreed that the representative office will open in Astana.
During the negotiations, the parties repeatedly stressed that the opening of a representative office is important for them.
For Euronews, the new branch is the easternmost of all. The channel gets the opportunity to control the agenda directly on the ground and increase the quantitative and qualitative training of local personnel.
At the same time, the plans of European journalists are not limited to Kazakhstan: we are talking about the preparation of the Central Asian news hub.
The authorities of Kazakhstan are trying to increase their prestige and recognition for the Western TV viewer, as well as to begin promoting their historical narratives in the Western information space.
Euronews is already preparing a Modern Nomads TV show dedicated to the art, culture and lifestyle of Kazakhs, as well as the East-West Connection program, which will cover business and economic events in the country. Euronews will also broadcast the World Nomad Games. The minister mentioned the importance of Kazakhstan as the heir to the "great civilization of nomads" and in every possible way emphasized the wealth of the country's historical heritage.
2022: Site blocking in Russia
On March 21, 2021, against the background of Russia's special operation in Ukraine, Roskomnadzor blocked the Euronews website.
2017: NBC takes stake in Euronews
American media conglomerate NBCUniversal, owned by Comcast Corp, invested in European broadcaster Euronews and announced Noah Oppenheim as president of NBC News, Reuters reported in February.
Financial details of the deal were not disclosed, but in November 2016, the publication reported that NBC would acquire a 15-30% stake. The investment will allow the company to reach 277 new households across Europe, Africa and the Middle East.
Oppenheim will be replaced in the new post by Deborah Terness, who has served as president since 2013. She, in turn, will become the first president of NBC News International. Oppenheim and Terness will report to chairman Andy Luck.
Euronews was created after the Gulf War in 1990 as "Europe's CNN" and was owned by a consortium of state-owned European channels until Egyptian billionaire Naguib Sawiris bought out 53% of the broadcaster.
2015: Egyptian billionaire wins control of Euronews channel
The announced[1] in March 2015, a deal to buy a controlling stake in Euronews television channel by Egyptian billionaire Naguib Sawiris took place. The businessman, through Media Globe Networks, owned by his family, became the owner of 53% of the shares (the remaining 47% of the shares remained with the previous Euronews shareholders: 21 public television channels and 3 local authorities). In exchange for shares, Sawiris increased the channel's capital by 35 million euros.
Following the purchase of a stake in Euronews, some changes in the channel management structure followed. The project will now be managed by three different bodies: the supervisory, editorial and executive boards. 10 editorial board members must be journalists or have extensive media experience. 7 out of 10 members of this editorial board, including the chairman, will be appointed directly by public shareholders of Euronews[2].
"The creation of the editorial board will ensure active constant control over the independence and diversity of Euronews editorial policy," the company said in a release.
"Public shareholders welcome the entry of Media Globe Networks into Euronews capital and intend to work alongside Naguib Sawiris to sustain the future growth and development of the company," commented Paolo Garimberti, current head of Euronews Supervisory Board.
I must say that in addition to changing the management structure, the Euronews group is expecting other updates in the near future. By the end of 2015, the company intends to launch a new TV channel - Africanews. It will be created in partnership with the national television channel of the Republic of Congo. The project will be multi-cultural, round-the-clock and broadcast in several languages. Euronews will initially launch English and French versions of Africanews and then add versions in languages widely distributed on the continent.
2013: 13.6m monthly viewers on YouTube
In 2013, Euronews set a record for audience coverage on YouTube, reaching 13.6 million unique viewers in December (according to comScore Video Metrix for December 2013) and showing an annual increase in the number of viewers by more than 160%. This new record puts Euronews at the top of the world for information media on YouTube.
