2021: Purchase of two data centers and GPX Global Systems office

In early September 2021, Equinix completed the acquisition of the Indian division of GPX Global Systems, while receiving two data centers in India. A deal worth $161 million also involves transferring the GPS office to the buyer.

The world's largest data center operator bought 2 data centers in India

The two new data centers of the International Business Exchange (IBX) in Mumbai, called Equinix MB1 and MB2, employ more than 350 international brands and local companies, including global cloud service providers, content delivery network providers, all local telecom operators, 170 Internet service providers and five Internet exchanges.

Both IBX complexes initially provide 1,350 cabinets and another 500 cabinets will be built and added to existing ones. According to the company, after full construction, these facilities will add more than 84 thousand square meters of space to place equipment on the Equinix platform.

Equinix India will be headed by Managing Director Manoj Paul, whom the company calls a veteran with more than twenty years of experience in this area. Before joining Equinix, Manoj Paul headed GPX India, and before working at GPX, he worked for 11 years at Bharti Airtel, where his last position was chief operating officer of an enterprise in the western region.

Globally, at the beginning of September 2021, Platform Equinix includes more than 230 data centers in 65 cities and 27 countries. In the Asia-Pacific region, the company operates 49 IBX data centers: 14 facilities in Japan, 5 facilities in Hong Kong, 4 data centers in Singapore, 1 in Seoul, as well as 1 in Jakarta and 6 in Shanghai. In Australia, the company has 1 data center in Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, 2 facilities in Perth, 5 in Melbourne and 8 in Sydney.[1]

2020: Equinix bought the Indian division of GPX Global Systems

In mid-August 2020, the world's largest operator Data Center Equinix continues to expand and acquired the Indian the GPX Global Systems division for $161 million. GPX India owns a campus in Mumbai with fiber optic connectivity and two data centers.

GPX India offers its users a cloud environment and access to major cloud services, including Amazon Direct Connect, Google Cloud Dedicated Interconnect and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure FastConnect. In turn, Equinix includes more than 210 data centers in 56 megacities and 26 countries, providing data processing and interworking services for more than 9,500 enterprises, including more than half of Fortune 500 firms. In Asia and the Pacific, Equinix has 46 data centers in 13 major cities.

Meyers noted that entering the Indian market has long been the strategic task of the company, and the acquisition of GPX will make it painless and with the greatest benefit. The GPX deal is expected to close in the first quarter of 2021.

In June 2020, Equinix also acquired 13 data centers from Bell Canada for $750 million. Bell Canada data centers are expected to bring Equinix more than $100 million in annual revenue and open new gateways from North America to Asia and Europe.[2]
