History

2024: Australian shipbuilding company Austal's purchase plan

Military-technical cooperation between Australia and South Korea in 2024 is rapidly developing.

A few years earlier, Hanwha had built a factory near Melbourne that assembled Redback infantry fighting vehicles and Huntsman self-propelled howitzers as part of a tender won by the Australian Department of Defense.

In early 2024, it became known that Hanwha aimed at the Australian shipbuilding pearl - Austal, which fulfills both commercial and defense government contracts. In addition to Australia, the company has production in the USA, Vietnam and the Philippines, a service center in Singapore.

A significant part of Austal's profits are generated by military orders in the United States, since the company has special permission from the American authorities.

The Australian side first rushed to deny the news of the sale of Austal, but, as it turned out, negotiations are actively underway.

Probably, the sale of Austal was one of the key issues of this meeting of representatives of the countries in April 2024. After negotiations, Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles told reporters that he had no fears for national security if Austal was sold to the South Koreans.

South Korea's serious plans for Australia are indicated by the fact that the country's defense minister left as ambassador to Canberra.

2015: Finalizing the deal to buy Samsung Techwin and changing its name to Hanwha Techwin

On July 15, 2015, it became known that the name of Samsung Techwin had changed after the completion of the transaction for its purchase by Hanwha Group Corporation. The new name is Hanwha Techwin ("Hanwa Tekwin"). Read more here
