2022: Construction of a pig house with a height of 26 floors
At the end of November 2022, the world's first pork skyscraper was opened in China. It is located in the urban district of Ezhou (Hubei province).
The 26-story pig breeding building was erected by Hubei Zhongxin Kaiwai Modern Farming. The volume of 800 thousand square meters. m is designed for living up to 650 thousand animals at the same time. At full capacity, annual production will amount to 100 thousand tons of pork (approximately 1.2 million slaughter per year). Taking into account the consumption of 52 kg of pork per person per year and more than 1.4 billion inhabitants, China is the largest consumer of pork in the world.
Virologist experts reacted ambiguously to the project. They noted that because pigs are not in contact with wildlife, they should not be approached by dangerous pathogens. But if the infection does penetrate, it can begin to spread at a tremendous rate, since many animals are collected in small rooms. In addition, under such conditions, the risk of mutations increases. The locals did not express delight either. They fear that when the pig farm is fully operational, the air in nearby areas could be filled with stench.
It is assumed that the problem of such a skyscraper for pigs is the removal of manure. In just a day, workers will have to remove up to 120 thousand cubic meters of waste. Experts decided that they would use manure as biofuel to heat the pigsty. Thus, after purification from sulfur, this biogas can be used to produce electricity. In turn, it will help "keep pigs warm, supply hot water to wash animals to worry about their health, and at the same time reduce harmful emissions.
At the end of November 2022, animals have already begun to enter the complex. They are transported through underground channels to separate cells and lifted to the designated floors by elevators.[1]
