2023: Interim functions of the Lebanese National Domain Registry

The IANA Address Space Administration Internet has officially announced that it is temporarily taking over the functions of the national. domain Lebanon LB registry. Previously, the management of the domain zone was carried out by the American University Beirut in and the Lebanese Domain Registry (LBDR). But, as reported by the Domain Incite resource, their cooperation was interrupted back in 2020. This was announced on July 17, 2023. National Internet Domain Coordination Center (CC)

Since then, the management of the domain zone was actually carried out by the efforts of one person - Nabil Bukhalid. It was he who headed the team of specialists who at one time opened Lebanon Internet access. Nabil Bukhalid was also the founder of the LBDR registry and the head of the Lebanese Center. Internet For his services in the development of the global network to the country , the Internet Society Hall of Fame (ISOC) was included in his Buchalid.

However, Lebanon for July 2023 has been in the deepest economic and political crisis for several years, which only aggravated the catastrophic explosion in the port of Beirut in 2020, the anti-government protests that followed it and the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, the country's government has neither the time nor the resources to support the national domain. Two years ago, Nabil Bukhalid had to transfer the LBDR registry to the American state of Delaware, since its functioning in Lebanon itself was not possible.

Unfortunately, in January 2023, Buchalid died after. From heart attack that moment on, the affairs of the.LB domain, in fact, were not dealt with by anyone. The IANA said that the organization will continue to interact with the colleagues of Nabil Bukhalid known to it and will act as a registry until enough qualified people and organizations can take on this role are found. As of July 2023, presumably a little less than 5 thousand names are registered in the.LB domain. The head of IANA Kim Davis appealed to the National Domain Support Organization (ICANN ccNSO) with a proposal to consider the possibility of developing policies that would regulate actions in such situations. The fact is that the national domains of many states are still managed by a few enthusiasts, and a repetition of such sad scenarios cannot be ruled out.
