Business in Russia
2022
Cigar House Fortune was bought by Russian business Imperial Brands
On April 20, 2022, it was announced that Russian investors bought out the assets of the tobacco company Imperial Brands, which produces Winston, West, Davidoff cigarettes. More than 1,500 Russians employed in production will retain their jobs. The amount of the transaction has not been disclosed.
According to Kommersant, Imperial Brands transfers its Russian business to Fortuna Cigar House (SDF), a joint venture of Megapolis distributor Igor Kesaev, Sergei Katsiev and Ukrainian businessman Vitaly Belous. SDF will move to the factory in Volgograd, which produces the brands Davidoff, West, Jade, P&S and Maxim, and a sales office in Moscow. The SDF sells cigars, tobacco, smoking accessories, materials and equipment, manages its own retail.
Imperial Brands occupies about 5.5% of the Russian tobacco market, the publication cites data from Business Analytics. JTI has more than 30%, Philip Morris has about 28%, British American Tobacco has 15-16%. Maxim Korolev, editor-in-chief of the Russian Tobacco news agency, believes that the share of Imperial Brands in the market is unlikely to change much with the change of business owner in Russia. According to him, the cost of cigarette production will increase due to logistical difficulties, and the demand for tobacco products in Russia is mainly determined by the price.
Andrei Sterlin, head of Business Analytics, adds that with the branch of Russian business, management efficiency and decision-making speed may also increase. As Korolev notes, mainly the demand for cigarettes in Russia is determined by the price. And the cost of cigarette production due to logistical difficulties will increase, so suppliers of tobacco products from Belarus will probably benefit from the situation, he notes.[1]
Business stoppage in Russia
In March 2022, the company announced that it was stopping its business in Russia. The company explains this decision by "the difficult situation in Russia as a result of international sanctions and subsequent serious interruptions in work" against the background of a special operation by the Russian Armed Forces in Ukraine. Russian employees will continue to receive salaries during the shutdown of production.
On March 15, 2022, it was announced that Imperial Brands would transfer the business to a Russian company.
