2024: Laboratory Launch
In September 2024, it became known about the work of the first laboratory of controlled bionic systems in Russia. She works on the basis of Sechenov University and is engaged in the creation of "artificial muscles" for people and robots.
According to Kommersant, the laboratory specializes in the development of polymer actuators - devices that can change shape under the influence of external stimuli, such as electricity or temperature. The head of the laboratory, candidate of physical and mathematical sciences Alexei Maksimkin explained that these devices are often called "artificial muscles" due to the similarity of their functions with biological muscles.
The main focus of the laboratory's research is to create electroactive actuators for medical use, in particular for wearable and implantable devices. Scientists are working to solve a number of technical problems, including the development of compact power supplies and ensuring the safety of devices in case of damage.
One of the successful projects of the laboratory was the development of a prototype anti-bed mattress based on electroactive actuators. This device differs from existing analogues in its smaller size, quiet operation and the possibility of more point action on the patient's body.
In addition, the laboratory team created a glove with pneumatic actuators to rehabilitate patients with neurological diseases. This device is already being tested at the Grossko Children's Scientific and Practical Center for Physical Rehabilitation and Sports.
In the future, laboratories can find application in the creation of "smart" exoskeletons, bionic prostheses and even implantable devices, such as artificial heart valves. Alexey Maksimkin noted that polymer actuators can be used not only in medicine, but also in robotics, agriculture and industry.[1]
