2023: Establishing a company

In 2023, the state-owned company LitioMx is to begin work in Mexico, which will be responsible for managing the exploration, production and processing of lithium throughout the country. The company was created by decree of Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on August 23, 2022.

The creation of LitioMix was the first step in implementing an amendment to the Mining Act passed by the Mexican Congress in April 2022. The amendment declared lithium a strategic mineral and the property of the nation and imposed a ban on issuing any permits for its exploration, extraction, operation, cleaning and use to third parties.

But so far, foreign companies continue to extract lithium from Mexican deposits.

Initially, the project to nationalize minerals assumed that all companies that managed to obtain a mining license earlier had the right to continue working within the framework of existing agreements.

One such company is China's Ganfeng Lithium, which mines lithium in Sonora State. It managed to gain access to the field thanks to the support of British partners in the person of the mining company Bacanora: the British have been developing since February 2021. In the same year, all Bacanora concessions were in the hands of Ganfeng Lithium, providing the Chinese giant with the sole right to access lithium in Sonora.
