2021: Death of Nine People Due to Medic Acid Pipe Breach
On August 9, 2021, nine patients died in the Republican Clinical Emergency Hospital (RKBSMP) of Vladikavkaz due to damage to the oxygen system.
According to the acting head of North Ossetia, Sergei Menyailo, the cause of the tragedy was a pipe break underground. It occurred at a depth of about 1.5 meters and was accompanied by cotton. As a result, pressure in the system decreased, which caused a failure of medical equipment. An Interfax source believes that the cause of the tragedy was equipment deterioration.
In total, at the time of the accident, 71 people were in intensive care, there were 13 of them on invasive artificial lung ventilation. Of those 13 patients, nine died.
According to the press service of the Ministry of Health of the region, eight women and one man are among the dead. All of them were aged 47 to 85 years and were in the intensive care unit in a state of extreme severity.
The Investigative Committee opened a criminal case under Part 3 of Art. 238 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (performance of work or provision of services that do not meet safety requirements, resulting in the death of two or more persons by negligence). The maximum punishment under this article provides for 10 years in prison. Roszdravnadzor and the prosecutor's office began inspections.
On the night of August 9-10, 2021, cars with oxygen arrived in Vladikavkaz. Three tons were brought from Kabardino-Balkaria, four from Stavropol and eight from Krasnodar. Another ton was sent from the airfield of the 4th Army of the Air Force and Air Defense of the Southern Military District in Mozdok. All medical institutions of the republic are provided with oxygen and continue to receive patients with the coronavirus COVID-19, the Ministry of Health assured.
In addition, Sergei Menyailo also instructed to check all other hospitals in North Ossetia, in which artificial lung ventilation devices are installed.[1]
