MainOne is a West African data center operator operating in Nigeria, Ghana and Kot -d. Main One was founded by Funke Trusteeship in 2010, it provided connectivity for the business sector in Nigeria and has three operating data centers and another, which is due to open in the first quarter of 2022. Main One also owns and operates an underwater network from Nigeria to Portugal, as well as 1,200 km of terrestrial fiber in southern Nigeria.

History

2022: Closing the sale of MainOne to Equinix

On April 5, 2022, it became known that Equinix announced the completion of the acquisition of a West African data center and a provider of MainOne connectivity solutions for $320 million.

MainOne Cable Company, founded by Funke Trusteeship in 2010, headquartered in Lagos, provides telecommunications services. The company offers wholesale broadband services through a system of cable networks and fiber optic infrastructures. MainOne serves telecommunications operators and providers, Governments, large businesses and schools throughout West Africa and abroad.

Closing the sale of MainOne to Equinix

The company employs about 500 employees and approximately 800-plus B2B customers, including the largest international technology enterprises, social networking companies, global telecommunications operators, financial companies and cloud service providers.

The completion of this acquisition reinforces Equinix's long-term strategy to become a leading African neutral digital infrastructure company capable of offering a full range of transformative technologies and communications capabilities in West Africa. MainOne will add more than 64 thousand square meters of total area to Platform Equinix and 570 thousand square meters of land for future expansion. In addition, the company includes an extensive 7,000-kilometer submarine network from Portugal to Lagos, Accra and along the coast of West Africa with ground stations in Nigeria, Ghana and Kot -d.

The transaction completion date has not been disclosed. After the completion of the transaction, MainOne will work under a new brand - "MainOne, an Equinix company," and Funke Trustee will continue to lead the company.

The acquisition transaction MainOne clearly not the latest in a series of strategic acquisitions for Equinix. After announcing its intention to acquire MainOne in December 2021, Equinix also announced an expansion in South America, planning to acquire three Entel data centers to expand digital transformation opportunities for local businesses and multinational companies.[1]

2021: Equinix bought MainOne for $320 million

In early December 2021, Equinix announced its expansion into Africa by acquiring MainOne. The amount of the transaction is $320 million, it is expected that the acquisition will be completed in the first quarter of 2022.

According to Equinix, the deal with MainOne represents the company's first step towards achieving its long-term strategy to become an African enterprise that is independent of digital infrastructure operators. Nigeria, with a population of more than 200 million, is Africa's largest economy. Equinix claims that along with Ghana, Nigeria is a recognized center of data centers, which is also important for the company to enter this market.

Equinix acquired MainOne for $320 million

The company MainOne, which by the beginning of December 2021 employs a team of 500 people, said that its facilities bring about $60 million annually. After the close of the deal, MainOne facilities will add Equinix more than 20,000 square meters of space and 174,000 square meters of land for future expansion.

The CEO MainOne Funke Trusteeship and the management of the company will continue to perform their functions after the completion of the acquisition transaction.
