History

2022: Becton Dickinson acquires MedKeeper for $93m

In early August 2022, Becton Dickinson announced the purchase of MedKeeper to continue the promotion of pharmacy technology that began with the purchase of Parata Systems. The deal will add cloud-based pharmacy management apps to Becton Dickinson's technology portfolio to support prescription drug preparation.

Becton Dickinson will pay $93 million for the acquisition of MedKeeper from pharmaceutical manufacturer Grifols, which itself bought the company in 2020. Grifols is selling the business as part of a plan to exit non-strategic activities, according to a press release.

The market for cloud solutions in the field of medicine is growing annually, and with it the demand for cloud specialists who specialize in building and maintaining virtual infrastructure is growing. MedKeeper is engaged in a cloud information system for medical and preventive institutions, the system itself serves to improve the efficiency of medical personnel.

The purchase of MedKeeper introduces Becton Dickinson into a new part of the pharmacy technology market. MedKeeper sells a photo-based drug document management system that is designed to document all stages of the IV preparation process, making them available for remote review and approval by a pharmacist. MedKeeper offers this technology as a way to improve efficiency and enforce compounding rules.

Becton Dickinson President of Drug Management Solutions Mike Garrison said that the software is well suited to the requirements of the modern pharmacy environment, where labor shortages caused by COVID-19 and changes in regulatory requirements have further exacerbated the need for customizable pharmacy software solutions. In light of such pressure, Garrison sees a need to change old practices to providing health care services for sick patients.[1]
