2021: Becton Dickinson bought Scanwell Health

On December 21, 2021, Becton Dickinson announced the completion of the acquisition of Scanwell Health, a home-based medical test company using smartphones. The financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Becton Dickinson has already collaborated with Scanwell in the field of coronavirus infection testing (COVID-19), and in February 2021, the company announced a collaboration with Scanwell Health to offer its mobile application in tandem with the Becton Dickinson Veritor home test on COVID-19. The test uses a smartphone camera and an application to obtain and interpret results.

Becton Dickinson expects the acquisition to have no significant impact on FY2022 results, and Scanwell's financial results will be reflected in Becton Dickinson's integrated diagnostic solutions segment in the life sciences. Scanwell will become a digital platform on the basis of which Becton Dickinson plans to develop home diagnostic tests for a number of infectious diseases, including COVID-19, influenza A + B, group A streptococcus and a number of other diseases.

The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the transition to new care settings, and Becton Dickinson is poised to provide a smart, connected home diagnostics ecosystem to support traditional and telemedicine providers and consumers. This acquisition will allow us to expand and scale our digital capabilities within the company to accelerate the entry into the market of transformative home diagnostics solutions now and in the future, "said Becton Dickinson President of Life Sciences Dave Hickey.

Representatives of Becton Dickinson said that as of December 2021, no other company uses a phone camera to obtain an image of the test, which is then analyzed and interpreted by the application to obtain a final positive or negative digital result. The app can also safely store and report test results to organizations, including businesses, health authorities, and schools.[1]
