2024: Creation of regulations on the use of generative artificial intelligence tools in the WCC

The Moscow City Pedagogical University (MGPU) has developed regulations on the use of generative artificial intelligence (SGII) in graduation qualification works (WCR) of students. This document, created by a group of teachers of the Institute of Foreign Languages of the Moscow State Pedagogical University, is aimed at establishing clear rules and recommendations for the use of artificial intelligence in the preparation of the WRC by students studying in the areas of "Linguistics" and "Pedagogical Education." The university announced this on August 20, 2024.

The regulations are a response to the development of artificial intelligence technologies and their growing influence on the educational process. According to a study conducted by MGPU, more than 70% of students already use various AI tools in the preparation of academic work. Under these conditions, the university took the initiative to create an ethical and methodological framework for integrating these technologies into the academic environment.

The document, developed by university experts, covers a large range of issues related to the use of SGII in the research work of students. It details the acceptable ways AI can be used at various stages of WFR preparation, including work scheduling, scientific literature search and analysis, empirical data processing, text editing, and bibliography design.

The regulation pays special attention to the ethical aspects of the use of AI. The authors of the document emphasize the need for a critical approach to information generated by artificial intelligence and mandatory verification of its reliability. The regulations also establish requirements for mandatory indication of the fact of using SGII in the text of the work and correct registration of references to the used AI tools.

The regulation provides a list of 10 recommended SGIIs, including tools such as GigaChat, YandexGPT and DeepL. At the same time, the document provides for the possibility of supplementing this list, which will allow adapting to rapidly developing technologies in this area.

The Regulation defines the list of recommended SGIIs, the content and format of work with them, as well as the procedure for issuing references to SGIIs used in the preparation of the WCR. The provisions contained in the regulations set the guidelines for the research work of students, taking into account the functionality of large language models and contribute to the implementation of uniform standards for research work,
said Irina Tivyaeva, deputy director of the Institute of Foreign Languages of the Moscow State Pedagogical University and one of the developers of the regulations.

The development of this regulation is part of the MGPU strategy for digital transformation of the educational process and meets the goals set in the Strategy for Digital Transformation industries sciences and Higher. formations By 2030, the university plans to fully integrate the use of AI into all aspects of the educational process, including not only the preparation of the WRC, but also current tasks, projects and research work of students.

Svetlana Mikhailova, a member of the development team and associate professor of the Department of Romance Languages and Linguodidactics of the Institute of Foreign Languages of the Moscow State Pedagogical University, notes that the introduction of the regulations will improve the quality of student research, develop critical thinking and digital literacy skills among students, as well as prepare them for work in a digital economy. It is expected that the implementation of the regulation will improve the quality of the WCR and will reduce the time spent working on the text.

The regulations have already received approval at a meeting of the scientific council of the institute and are planned for testing in the academic year 2024-2025. More than 500 undergraduate and graduate students will take part in the pilot project. MSPU experts express confidence that the university's experience can be scaled and adapted for use in other higher educational institutions in Russia, which could potentially lead to the formation of new standards in the field of academic writing and research work of students.

The initiative of the Moscow State Pedagogical University to develop regulations for the use of AI in the WCR demonstrates the university's proactive approach to the challenges of the digital era and its desire for innovation in education. This step could be an important milestone in the development of higher education in Russia, opening up new opportunities for integrating advanced technologies into the educational process while maintaining high academic standards and ethical standards.
