OJSC GOZ Obukhov Plant is one of the leading enterprises of the country's military-industrial complex. 2025: BAZ Truck Production Launch

In February 2025, it became known that the first assembly of heavy BAZ trucks was launched in St. Petersburg. Investments in the project amounted to ₽12,5 billion, the company said. The production of equipment was organized at the facilities of Obukhov Plant JSC, which is part of the Almaz-Antey East Kazakhstan concern.

According to the press service of BAZ, the general director of Romanov JSC Dmitry Grechukhin said that the new model was developed taking into account modern technologies. The design of trucks is based on a modular platform that provides high cross-country ability. He added that transport axes are created on the basis of technologies used in military equipment. According to him, the truck surpasses its foreign counterparts in off-road characteristics, including Volvo and Mercedes.

The decision to create a truck was made in 2019. In 2022, Obukhovsky Zavod JSC began developing a model in a specially created engineering center. In 2023, the first prototype was assembled. In 2024, the machine passed certification tests confirming compliance with Russian standards.

According to the company, full-scale production of cars is scheduled for mid-2025. In the first year, it is planned to assemble 200 units, and by 2027 the volume of production should reach 2 thousand cars per year. Grechukhin said the trucks are designed to replace foreign models previously supplied to the Russian market. He noted that BAZ has an independent suspension that provides improved off-road performance in difficult climatic conditions.

BAZ production is part of the state program for the development of domestic automotive industry. The new equipment will be used in both the civilian and military sectors. The plant has the necessary capacity to produce trucks adapted to Russian operating conditions.^[1]

Investing 37 billion rubles in the development of the plant

Concern VKO Almaz-Antey"" invests 35-37 billion rubles in preparation for the production of trucks for civilian needs and electric vehicles at the former enterprise Toyota in. According to him, for these funds, the enterprise will create lines for assembling trucks of its own design of BAZ and E-Neva electric vehicles. It is expected that at the full capacity of the plant, the annual volume of BAZ production will be 2 thousand cars, and E-Neva - up to 60 thousand.

Deputy Prime Minister - Head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade Denis Manturov said earlier in 2023 that it is expected that the production of the E-Neva electric crossover developed by Almaz-Antey could begin at the former Toyota site in 2026.

The E-Neva electric crossover is built on the original platform developed by the Obukhov plant. The power plant of the prototype consists of two electric motors with a total power of 435 hp. and 824 N·m of torque. The maximum speed is limited by electronics at around 197 km/h. It is also planned to create a hydrogen version and a sequential hybrid.

In addition, as Mikhail Garter noted in an interview with RIA Novosti, it is planned to master the production of L-type electric microcar at a plant in St. Petersburg. The presentation of the novelty will be held May 25-26, 2023.

The microcar will receive fast-changing Russian-made batteries, thanks to which the range will be 183 km per charge. The maximum speed is 90 km/h. The start of production is scheduled for 2024.^[2]

Gaining control of Toyota's former St. Petersburg plant

Obukhov Plant, part of the Almaz-Antey defense concern, officially became the management company of the former Toyota plant in St. Petersburg at the end of April 2023. 2020: Almaz-Antey completed the creation of a regional center, investing 50 billion rubles in it

The Almaz-Antey aerospace defense concern completed in January 2020 the formation of its North-West Regional Center (North-West Regional Center) in St. Petersburg, the plans for the creation of which were announced back in 2007. He modernized the buildings of the Obukhov plant, built new squares there and transferred his controlled industrial enterprises to them from the historical center. The project has become one of the largest in terms of modernization and transfer of production in recent years^[3]

For its implementation in 2008, LLC SZRC Concern VKO Almaz-Antey was created. In the near future, it will be annexed to the holding's key St. Petersburg asset, the Obukhov Plant (officially it is now called JSC SZRC Concern VKO Almaz-Antey - Obukhov Plant).

On December 22, 2020, the Bank of Russia registered an additional issue of ordinary shares of JSC, they will be placed by exchange for shares of participants in the authorized capital of LLC.

"Currently, work is underway to sell the released assets. Upon its completion, all the tasks for which LLC "SZRC Concern VKO" Almaz-Antey "was created will be completed. New buildings and production facilities are transferred to the combined JSC, and the LLC will cease to exist, "the press service of the Obukhov plant said. The Obukhov plant is the largest production site of the Almaz-Antey concern in St. Petersburg: on the territory of almost 62 hectares there are more than 320 thousand m2 of production and technological areas, including research, production and laboratory testing bases.
