Toyota lost $655 million in six months

According to Toyota chief accountant Masahira Yamamoto, the corresponding "amount of losses incurred in the first half of the year includes the cost of dismissal of departing employees and the cost of impairment of assets."

The company announced the decision to close the plant in the village of Shushary in St. Petersburg, which worked in the country for 15 years, at the end of September 2022. The automaker has planned to restructure its representative office in Moscow to support retail chains and provide customer service in the country.

As noted in the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation, the company will maintain after-sales service for Toyota and Lexus cars in the Russian market and support for the local dealer network. The ministry added that it was working on possible scenarios for the development of the St. Petersburg site with the authorities of St. Petersburg.

Toyota acknowledged in late October 2022 that annual output was likely to fall below target. The company's plans to produce at least 9.7 million vehicles for the current fiscal year, which ends in March 2023, have been derailed by a global shortage of semiconductor chips.

Toyota has produced cars in the industrial zone of Shushary in St. Petersburg since 2007. In 2021, 80,800 Camry and RAV4 cars were produced at the plant.^[1]

Shutdown and conservation of production in Russia

The St. Petersburg Toyota plant has been idle since the spring of 2022 after the start of Russia's special operation in Ukraine, and those cars that did not have time to assemble were eventually dismantled for spare parts, the Toyota dealership said in September 2022. Dealerships hope for parallel imports, but "according to preliminary estimates, taking into account all possible problems and risks, prices will be higher than the current ones."

On September 23, 2022, Toyota officially announced the cessation of car production in Russia, noting that this decision was not easy for it. The company's plant in Shushary (Petersburg) worked for 15 years. The automaker was never able to establish the supply of components to the Russian Federation. Now the site will be mothballed and subsequently possibly sold, but Toyota production will not resume on it.

Toyota will help its employees in the Russian Federation with employment and retraining, is ready to provide financial support, the company said.

The Moscow office of the concern will also be optimized: its employees and the staff of the plant will be offered increased compensation - from 12 salaries. At the same time, the company does not leave the Russian Federation.

In mid-October 2022, the dismissal of 2,000 employees in Russia was announced.

2007

Opening of Toyota Bank

In 2007, Toyota Bank CJSC began operating in Russia, having representative offices in Moscow and St. Petersburg. The bank's specialization is retail car loans and corporate lending to official car dealers Toyota and Lexus.
