2023: Car recall due to defective airbags
Toyota recalls tens of thousands of cars in Russia due to defective airbags that cause injuries. This was announced in early March 2023 by the Federal Agency for Technical Regulation and Metrology (Rosstandart).
The service campaign included 22,712 Avensis sedans sold in Russia from April 2003 to May 2007. In some vehicles equipped with driver's airbags, there is a possibility of a decrease in the density of the substance of the cartridge over time due to the effect of high ambient temperatures and humidity on the gas generator. In such a situation, degradation of the substance of the cartridge is possible. The operation of the airbag in an accident with a degraded substance can lead to the destruction of the gas generator body and, in the worst case, the penetration of fragments of the gas generator through the airbag into the car interior, which in turn can lead to serious injuries to the driver and passengers of the car. All cars will replace the gas generator of the driver's airbag.
Representatives of Toyota Motor LLC will inform the owners of cars subject to the program by letter or phone. Owners can independently determine whether their car is being recalled on the Rosstandart website or using the service Auto.ru. If the car falls under the recall program, the owner of such a car needs to contact the nearest dealership and agree on the time of the visit, Rosstandart reported.
This recall campaign at the Russian representative office of Toyota is the third since the beginning of 2023. As part of these campaigns, more than 71 thousand vehicles under the Toyota and Lexus brands fell under recall.[1]
