2022: Establishing a Center
The President Russia Vladimir Putin signed a decree on the education National genetic Plant Resource Center. The corresponding document on the official portal of legal information was published on February 8, 2022.
In order to ensure the scientific and technological development of the Russian Federation and a comprehensive solution to the problems of accelerated development of genetic technologies, I decide: to form the National Center for Plant Genetic Resources on the basis of the federal state budgetary scientific institution "Federal Research Center of the All-Russian Institute of Plant Genetic Resources named after N.I. Vavilov," the document says. |
The decree notes that the main functions of the center will be:
- The creation and maintenance of a national catalogue of particularly valuable plant genetic specimens;
- development of methods for their collection, storage of integrated assessment and use;
- Monitoring the state of plant genetic resources at their natural growth and cultivation sites;
- maintaining databases, as well as international cooperation (respecting the interests of the Russian Federation in the fields of scientific and technological development and food security) on issues related to the study, conservation and reproduction of plant genetic resources.
Putin instructed the Government of the Russian Federation within six months from the date of publication of the decree (February 8, 2022) to develop and approve the development program of the National Center. The coordination of the activities of the new genetic center is entrusted to the interdepartmental commission for the formation, conservation and use of collections of plant genetic resources.
The Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation is entrusted with assisting the Institute named after N.I. Vavilov in connection with the formation of the National Center on its basis.[1]
