2023: VimpelCom bought 16.4% of the New School service

In November 2023, VimpelCom, through its subsidiary Haiv LLC, bought 16.4% of the New School company, which is developing the exam preparation service of the same name. The corresponding entry is registered in the Unified State Register of Legal Entities (USRUL).

VimpelCom confirmed to Kommersant that they had invested in New School without disclosing the amount of the transaction. In February 2023, the co-founder of the EdTech company Timur Safin, in an interview with TAdviser, said that New School had attracted 67 million rubles of investments. At the same time, he did not name investors then.

However, the source of the publication on the EdTech market described the "New School" as a "niche project": "Perhaps the children's segment of online education is not a priority direction for VimpelCom, and he decided to invest in it with minimal losses for the fund."

According to Smart Ranking analyst Margarita Aranovskaya, projects designed exclusively for preparing for exams periodically appear on the market, but "we have not seen any breakthrough stories for a long time." The expert noted that the examination preparation services are characterized by the problem of a short life cycle: the client passes exams and leaves the site. The same additional education platforms that work with students up to and including primary school receive a client for 8-10 years, she added.

Ultimate Education CEO Pavel Moseikin, in a conversation with the newspaper, stressed that by the end of 2023 there is a high demand for children's education in Russia, parents retain investments in children's education, and there is also a noticeable increase in state interest in the sector. According to Smart Ranking analysts, the volume of the Russian EdTech market in the third quarter of 2023 increased by 38%, with the children's education sector growing faster than the adult sector.[1]
