2024: ₽1,8 billion funicular launch
In mid-October 2024, the first results of the work of the new funicular launched a month ago were summed up in the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin. The project, the implementation of which cost ₽1,8 billion, has already attracted significant attention of residents and guests of the city.
During the first month of operation, 48.9 thousand people used the funicular. Total revenue from ticket sales amounted to ₽9,6 million. The cost of one trip is ₽200, but the authorities are considering expanding the tariff grid.
Dmitry Gryzin, manager of the government of the Nizhny Novgorod region, noted the uniqueness of the project, stressing that the funicular passes through the Kremlin wall, which is an object of cultural heritage. This required extreme caution when carrying out construction work.
The construction of the funicular began in 2019 and was supposed to be completed by the 800th anniversary of Nizhny Novgorod in 2021. However, the project faced a number of difficulties, including the discovery of the foundation of an old funicular and a landslide on the Kremlin slope, which led to the need to redesign and carry out additional work to strengthen the slope.
The capacity of one car of the funicular is 40 people, and its carrying capacity is 3 tons. There is a cafe at the upper station, special ramps and turnstiles are provided for people with limited mobility.
The regional authorities expect that the annual passenger traffic of the funicular will be 300-400 thousand people, mainly tourists. Despite significant investments, the project is seen as an image project, and its payback is planned in the long term.
The funicular is open daily from 10:00 to 21:00. Currently, the authorities are forming a staff and holding a competition to select an organization for the maintenance of the facility. The initial maximum service contract price by the end of 2026 is ₽56 million.[1][2]
