History

2025: Release of Remote-Controlled Road Construction Machinery

The Russian company UMG, specializing in the production of road construction and special equipment, has developed a radio control system for its machines. The technology has already been implemented on M280 mulcher and other tracked engineering equipment. The operator was able to control all the functions of the machine and its working elements at a distance. UMG told about this at the end of November 2025.

The development was carried out jointly with leading Russian scientific centers of radio electronics. For each model of equipment, an individual console configuration is created, which provides communication at a distance of up to one and a half kilometers. The use of intermediate repeaters and special virtual reality glasses extends the range to two tens of kilometers.

The built-in cameras broadcast the picture to the display or to virtual reality glasses worn by the operator. Computer vision technology makes it possible to track what is happening in the work area at every moment in time. The operator sees the environment as clearly as from the cabin of the car.

The video surveillance system shows the state of the working nodes and the space around the equipment. The person behind the remote control receives a complete picture of what is happening thanks to the cameras located around the perimeter of the car. The glasses create a feeling of being inside the cabin, which increases the quality of accurate manipulations.

The technology is designed to work in places of natural disasters and industrial accidents. Equipment is indispensable where the presence of a person poses a threat to his life during engineering operations. Unmanned controls eliminate health hazards to workers in extreme conditions.

Machines are used to analyze debris, eliminate the consequences of disasters, activities in radioactive or chemically infected zones. Mulcher equipment grinds shrubs and trees, which is critical when arranging protective strips from fires in remote areas.^[1]
