History

2019: Delivery of six OneWeb satellites to the Kuru Cosmodrome

On January 23, 2019, OneWeb Satellites, a joint venture between Airbus and OneWeb, announced the supply of six satellites from the OneWeb constellation to the Kuru Cosmodrome. The first launch of the mega-group is scheduled for February 19, 2019 aboard the Soyuz launch vehicle.

The satellites were produced at the OneWeb Satellites plant, located on the basis of Airbus Defense and Space in Toulouse. The launch of satellites of this generation opens the next stage in the project OneWeb Satellites.

OneWeb Satellites will focus on increasing the production of the satellite constellation at its plant in Florida.

2016: Creating JV OneWeb Satellites

Airbus Defense and Space and OneWeb announced in February 2015 the creation of a joint venture, OneWeb Satellites, which will develop and build the 900 satellites needed to launch a global high-speed Internet access system.

The constellation of satellites in low Earth orbit is OneWeb designed to provide communication services in remote parts of the world. By 2019, it should provide new capacities for data transmission at a total speed of more than ten terabits per second.

The Airbus and OneWeb owned company OneWeb Satellites will also build satellites, platforms and create equipment for other operators. The sale of equipment will be carried out by Airbus.

Micro-satellites weighing less than 150 kilograms will be created from light materials and consist of fewer components than traditional devices.

Patented terminals located on board satellites will provide high-speed communication. In addition, they provide for the inclusion of solar batteries battery units, as well as Wi-Fi transmitters//3G LTE and 2G, which can provide a signal directly to, and cell phones tablets laptops.

Thanks to the use of Progressive Pitch technology, satellites will tilt as they approach the equator so as not to interfere with the operation of geostationary satellites.

At the end of the service life, satellites will automatically leave orbit without creating space debris on it. It is assumed that satellite launches will be carried out starting in 2018 by Arianespace and Virgin Galactic, and they will reach the necessary orbital positions using electric engines.[1]

The OneWeb project will be implemented with the support of Bharti Enterprises, Hughes Network Systems, Intelsat, Qualcomm, Coca-Cola, Totalplay and Virgin Group, with an initial investment of $500 million. The total cost of the project is projected to be $2 billion.
