2021: Launch an organization to develop 3D games

In early July 2021, the Linux Foundation announced the creation of the Open 3D Foundation organization, which will develop 3D games and modeling technologies. The project is launched with the Open 3D Engine (O3DE), a new version of the Amazon Lumberyard game engine.

The goal of the Open 3D Foundation, which has more than 20 founding partners, including Adobe, Huawei and Niantic, is "to give developers and content creators access to create 3D capabilities that are not burdened with commercial conditions," the Linux Foundation said in a press release.

Linux Foundation Technical Director Chris Anishchik noted that the Open 3D Foundation, will provide game developers and engines the opportunity to influence the direction of development of the AAA class 3D engine, which has long been supported by the global open source community. According to Anishchik, industries, including healthcare, automotive, which need 3D modeling, will also benefit from the formation of the Open 3D Foundation.

The first initiative of the new organization is the engine for working with 3D objects, distributed under the license Apache 2.0, Open 3D Engine (O3DE). Developers will have the opportunity to write code on with, C++ LUA and. Python Animators, technical artists, level designers, and other content creators can work with built-in O3DE development tools.

O3DE is a cross-platform engine, developers can use it to create applications for PCs and mobile devices with iOS and Android. It is assumed that in the future the platform will be used to work with the consoles PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch.[1]
