2021: Defeat in dispute with Amazon over Future Retail purchase

2020: Google's 7.7% sale plan to Jio Platforms for $4.5 billion

Indian Reliance Industries announced on July 15, 2020 that Google will acquire a 7.7% stake in its digital division Jio Platforms for $4.5 billion, in order to produce budget smartphones for the poor in India.

Google and Jio Platforms have signed a commercial agreement to jointly develop an inexpensive smartphone for Android operating systems.

Taking into account Google's investments, strategic and financial investors have invested $1.52 trillion rupees ($20.22 billion) in Jio over the past few months, Reliance Chairman Mukesh Ambani said at the company's annual shareholder meeting, which was held online.

Jio Platforms includes applications for listening to music and watching films, but its main component is the telecommunications company Jio Infocomm, the largest mobile operator in India with more than 387 million subscribers.

Facebook in April acquired a 10% stake in Jio for $5.7 billion, seeking to use its popular WhatsApp messenger to provide digital payments to small grocery stores in India.
