The institute is created in 1967 as industry body of the state system of scientific and technical information. Now is a large scientific-industrial complex which staff performs large volume of research works, improves operating and implements new information technologies.

Today the institute is parent organization on information support of a technical system of agro-industrial complex of Russia. Scientists and specialists of institute conduct researches on economy, the organization and functioning of a technical system, market monitoring of agricultural machinery and assessment of its technological level, improvement of a system of technical service, on problems of development of bodies of Gostehnadzor and rural territories, create information resources concerning mechanization of agriculture and processing industries. On the basis of scientific research scientific reports, state-of-the-art reviews, methodical recommendations are prepared, monitoring of the innovative development of HSC is carried out.

The institute prepares and published fundamental directories, reference books, scientific publications on agricultural machinery, machines and the equipment for processing industries, technical service: "Agricultural machinery", "Machines and equipment for HSC", "Reference book by the mechanical engineer of agricultural production", "Reference book by the engineer on technical service of machines and equipment in HSC", "Reference book by the electrical engineer of agricultural production" and many others.

Scientific departments participated in implementation of scientific and technical programs: "The equipment for food of Russia for 1999-2006", "Increase in fertility of soils of the Russian Federation", "Development of a linen complex of Russia", "Informatization of HSC of Russia for 1996-2000", the program of the Union State "Increase in efficiency of processing of fruit and vegetable products on the basis of progressive technologies and the equipment for 2001-2007", etc.

The institute performed information and analytical support and the publication of all materials of implementation of the priority national project Development of HSC. In FGNU "Rosinformagrotekh" the banks and databases, largest in the country, with information on mechanization and processing of agricultural products are concentrated. Among them: documentary database (D) on engineering facilities of HSC (100 thousand documents); a factual DB on machines and the equipment; DB of test sheets of the agricultural equipment; graphic DB; full text DB of forecast and analytical information, etc. A basis of analytical and reference activity of institute is the reference fund over 200 thousand pieces. The fund represents the most complete collection of scientific and technical, economic and legal information concerning the technical system of HSC.

The institute annually performs information support and over 30 international and All-Russian exhibitions, fairs, meetings and seminars participate in the organization. Among them: Russian agro-industrial exhibition "Indian summer", Agrorus trade fair (St. Petersburg), international exhibitions Agroprodmash, Prodekspo, etc.

Staff of institute attends the international exhibitions "Green Week", "Agritechnica" (Germany), "SIMA" (France) on the basis of which comparative, forecast and analytical and other information materials are prepared. Since 2000 at institute the annual conference of Informagro is held.

The test center of institute tests technologies and complexes of machines for cultivation, cleaning and postharvest processing of vegetables in the discovered and protected soil and also gribovodstvo, cultivation of landing material, landing, leaving and harvesting in gardens and berry-pickers, cultivation and cleaning of potatoes, forage crops on hay and a silo, machines for protection of plants against wreckers and diseases. Annually about 10 machines are tested, it is assisted agricultural producers Pushkin and other districts of Moscow region in accomplishment of the mechanized works.
