2021: Acquisition by Konica Minolta
On February 24, 2021, Konica Minolta informed Zdrav.Expert about the entry into the hyperspectral imaging (HSI) market and the acquisition of its player - the Finnish company Specim, Spectrum Imaging Oy Ltd. The deal will help Konica Minolta continue to develop its measurement technology division, which provides a wide range of solutions for various industries - including IT and automotive.
Specim has been in the HSI market for 25 years. During this time, she took a good position in the industry and created a line of products covering a large range of wavelengths - from the visible to the infrared spectrum. The company's line of equipment includes portable, embedded in-line and on-board devices. They are used by customers from various industries: food and, pharmaceutical industries as well as recycling enterprises, primarily manufacturers of sorting equipment.
For example, in 2021, Specim introduced the SpecimONE platform. It simplifies and accelerates the integration of hyperspectral imaging technology into industrial production, which will further develop the HSI business and manufacturing applications.
Thus, Specim is a driver of the expansion of the industrial application of HSI technologies for raw materials sorting, food production and remote research. Konica Minolta acquired not only a 100% stake in the company, but also its HSI technology, know-how and customer base.
The deal plays an important role in expanding Konica Minolta's measurement, verification and diagnostic business. The company considers hyperspectral imaging as a key technology as part of the strategy for the development of the measurement technology division. Konica Minolta offers solutions for measuring color, light and visual evaluation of surfaces based on optical technologies.
So the company helps customers create high-quality products. And the expansion of HSI will make it possible to contribute to solving global problems in the field of safety and environmental protection.
As a result of the transaction, Konica Minolta will accelerate the expansion of the use of hyperspectral imaging and its integration into production equipment. The company plans to combine HSI technology with its color management and quality control solutions - in particular, in collaboration with manufacturers of food products and sorting equipment for recycling. The company will also focus on growing markets - for example, the field of pharmaceuticals.
