History

2022: Ban on Syngenta sunflower seeds imported to Russia from Spain and France due to fungus presence

Since November 21, 2022, the Rosselkhoznadzor has banned the supply of sunflower seeds from all Syngenta Espana S.A. and Syngenta France SAS companies sites (shipping sites), the agency said.

Sunflower fomopsis fungus, a quarantine facility for Russia and the EAEU, was found in these seeds, the department explained. Supplies will be banned because Spanish and French national plant protection authorities do not take urgent measures to ensure phytosanitary safety of products. Rosselkhoznadzor referred to Article VII of the International Convention on Quarantine and Plant Protection and the Federal Law "On Plant Quarantine."

Sunflower fomopsis causes fomopsiosis (gray or brown spot, sunflower stem cancer), one of the most intensely spreading sunflower diseases in the world. Infected seeds are considered the main source of the spread of infection. Loss of sunflower seed yield during epiphytitias can be 80%.
