2026: Drop in traffic from search engines and revenue. Staff reduction

In February 2026, the Washington Post began large-scale staff cuts that affect almost all news departments.

The exact number of layoffs was not disclosed, but plans to cut up to 300 employees were previously reported; over the past three years, the staff has already decreased by about 400 people.

The Washington Post officially leaves Ukraine and the Middle East - the publication announced the closure of its foreign bureaus in Kyiv and a number of key points in the Middle East.

After Jeff Bezos banned the newspaper from supporting Kamala Harris before the 2024 presidential election, the publication lost hundreds of thousands of subscribers, and the $100 million financial hole became critical.

The management explains the measures by financial difficulties and a change in the media market: falling advertising revenue, declining subscriber numbers and a sharp decline in traffic from search engines due to AI reports.

The newspaper intends to focus on key topics for itself - politics, national affairs, security, and will also continue to cover science, health, technology and business. The goal is to create a more sustainable business model.
