2023: Russian Market Exit Plan

Tinder owner Match Group said in May 2023 that it would leave Russia by June 30, citing the need to protect human rights: "Our brands are taking steps to restrict access to their services in Russia and will complete their withdrawal from the Russian market by June 30, 2023."

2020: Blocking service in Pakistan

In early September, Pakistani authorities blocked all dating services, including Tinder and Grindr, due to "immoral and obscene content."

According to CNN, the country's popular applications Tagged, Skout and SayHi have been banned. Pakistan's telecommunications watchdog said their owners had violated the country's laws. It is known that the authorities can "reconsider" the blocking if blocked services comply with local laws, preventing the appearance of obscene and immoral content.

According to analytical data from Sensor Tower, Tinder, an application that is especially popular in the United States and Western countries, has been downloaded 440,000 times in Pakistan over the past 12 months. During the same period, the application was downloaded 13 million times in the United States.

All dating services blocked in Pakistan

The Grindr application, which positions itself as the largest application for gay, bisexual, transgender people, has been downloaded 300,000 times in Pakistan over the past 12 months. During the same period, this application was downloaded approximately 2 million times in the United States. Tagged and SayHi have been downloaded approximately 300,000 times in Pakistan, and the Skout application has been downloaded 100,000 times.

Pakistan's regulator has also not ruled out blocking the popular video creation and sharing app TikTok. In July 2020, the state body issued a "final warning" to TikTok for "immoral, obscene and vulgar content" found on the service. At the end of August 2020, the telecommunications regulator announced the results of negotiations with TikTok management. Despite the fact that the service has taken measures to moderate content, in the future it is obliged to take a more responsible approach to the problem of the appearance of indecent materials in order to ensure compliance with local requirements.[1]

2019: How ranking profiles by attractiveness works

In 2019, experts analyzed Tinder algorithms. They found out that the application now uses an improved system for ranking profiles by attractiveness.

If you like a person with a high attractiveness rating (the person many people like), then your rating rises. If you liked the "unwanted" character, then the rating is lowered. Conversely, the more attractive people like you, the more popular you become for algorithms.

Tinder monitors whether you write messages to the person with whom you have a match (mutual sympathy) or continue to flick through the deck of profiles. There is information that Tinder also analyzes your correspondence in the application, and if you exchange phone numbers with your interlocutor, then your rating rises synchronously (because you use an application for real dating).

In the latest update, Tinder added an Amazonian image analysis system to AWS improve profile ranking. Tinder divides people according to the degree of attractiveness and shows equally popular people to each other, only sometimes diluting them with more or less popular profiles. Similar algorithms are used by Chinese dating sites to compile their own social rating.
