2024: Prime Minister Keir Starmer did not declare the fact of paying a sponsor for clothes for him and his wife

In September 2024, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer was at the center of a scandal over gifts from the Labour Party's largest donor to his wife.

Starmer faces an investigation for violating parliamentary rules, as he did not declare the fact that his party's sponsor paid for expensive clothes for his wife Victoria.

Waheed Alli, a prominent media mogul and former head of internet retailer Asos, gave money for clothing and stylist services for Mrs Starmer. He did this both before and after the prime minister took office in July 2024.

The businessman is also Starmer's own largest financial donor. For 2024, he bought the premiere clothes, glasses and watches worth more than 18,000 pounds. He also spent £20,000 on the prime minister's accommodation during  the parliamentary elections and the same amount on the expenses of his "personal office."

As a result, Wahid Alli received a pass that opens him unlimited access to 10 Downing Street. Formally, only the closest political advisers and ministers can have such a right.

Alli donated £500,000 to Labour. Now, as it turned out, Wahid out of pocket pays for the personal expenses of the Starmer family.

Intelligence agencies banned British ministers from using personal smartphones after reports of hacking the ex-prime minister's phone

On October 30, 2022, it became known that the leadership of the intelligence service Great Britain appealed to ministers to stop using their personal phones and smartphones to negotiate on state issues. The directive is dictated by the scandal that erupted in connection with the hacking of the mobile device of former British Prime Minister Liz Truss, who resigned on October 20, 2022.

It is reported that the hacking of Liz Truss's phone was discovered back in the summer of 2022, when she served as British Foreign Secretary. In the hands of hackers who allegedly acted in the interests of Moscow, there could be delicate correspondence, including a discussion of the supply of weapons to Ukraine.

Intelligence agencies banned British ministers from using personal smartphones

By order of Boris Johnson, who was Prime Minister at the time, and Cabinet Secretary Simon Case, the fact of the leak of confidential information was hidden. Even deputies and officials with the highest level of admission were in the dark. However, the Intelligence and Security Committee is now likely to investigate the incident.

One problem is that encrypted devices released by the government are too bulky and inconvenient to use. Therefore, officials prefer their own smartphones, creating a threat to national security. Apparently, now British ministers will have to say goodbye to personal mobile devices in the conduct of public affairs. In addition, they will have to take special safe communication courses.[2]
