2019: Number of data centers - 12,166 ; many of them are ineffective

A report released in mid-April 2019 by the State Office of General Accounting (GAO) revealed the inefficiency of many US government data storage and processing centers, of which there are 12,166 .

The GAO came to the disappointing conclusion that the U.S. government has failed to consolidate data centers and streamline operations, and hybrid computing is still extremely limited. Although in 2010, the US Office of the Budget began work on consolidating federal data centers to save money, the goals were never achieved by April 2019.

Dynamics of change in the number of data centers in the American government, GAO data

The report indicates that while, government agencies have committed to taking action to close about half of the data centers in the combined cadastral, 11 agencies have not even begun to implement the plan. Until agencies consolidate the data centers and estimate the associated cost savings, the benefits of the consolidation program will not be fully realized. In addition, GAO noted that most government agencies did not use automated server monitoring and did not take into account electricity consumption.

However, some agencies within the US government have managed to meet the planned targets. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) was not able to use its own data storage and processing centers, and therefore switched to using cloud services. The Social Security Administration began to use hybrid cloud computing as a way to modernize IT, which made it possible to simplify software and hardware systems. Other agencies have focused on closing unused data centers and streamlining workflows. [1]

Decree on the liquidation of the Department of Education due to a failure in the education of schoolchildren and the transfer of its functions to the states

March 20, 2025 US President Donald Trump:

"Today we are taking a truly historic action that has been in the making for 45 years. In a few minutes, I will sign a decree on the beginning of the liquidation of the Department of Education once and for all.

The United States spends more money per student than any other country, but we are almost the last in terms of academic performance - 70% of eighth graders do not possess enough reading or mathematics.

Despite these staggering lapses, the department's discretionary budget has risen 600%, and it houses bureaucrats in buildings across Washington, D.C.

It is announced that the useful functions of the Department of Education, such as Pell Grants, Title 1 funding and resources for children with disabilities, will be fully preserved and transferred to other agencies and departments.

We're going to just take education back to the states where it belongs. It's a sensible move and it will work.'

Voluntary dismissal of 75 thousand federal employees or 3% of their total number

The voluntary termination program, initiated by the administration of US President Donald Trump, attracted 75,000 federal employees or 3% of 2.4 million.

The program allowed those who quit in February 2025 to keep their salaries until September.

The Trump administration has repeatedly warned workers that offering a "ransom" could be their best chance. Trump has already ordered federal agencies to prepare for job cuts.

2018: Record-breaking 34-day government shutdown

The US government shutdown due to a lack of funds to pay employees happened in December 2018 and became the longest in history: it lasted 34 days (and was estimated to cost the US economy about $3 billion).

Before that, there was another short break in January 2018, quite a long one in September 2013, and before it there was a pause of almost two decades.
