Vodafone Italia S.p.A. - a telecom operator in Italy.

History

2023:20% of employees laid off due to crisis in Italian telecom

On June 12, 2023, Vodafone announced the reduction of 1,000 jobs in Italy, which is almost a fifth of the total number of company employees in the country. Mass layoffs in the telecom operator are taking place against the backdrop of a crisis in the Italian telecommunications industry.

Vodafone is set to cut its Italian unit as part of a larger plan to reduce costs internally, two union officials told Reuters. As of March 2022, Vodafone's headcount in Italy was 5,765, the group said in its 2022 accounts.

Vodafone announces 1,000 job cuts in Italy

Vodafone Italia said in a statement that the company intends to cut 1,000 jobs after falling revenues and profits as a result of "extraordinary competitive pressure" in the telecommunications sector. The leadership of Vodafone Italia shared this news at a meeting with trade unions, at which top management informed them of the need for "radical simplification" of activities.

Obviously, we are faced with another demonstration of the wrong model of the telecommunications sector. Rate cuts driven by exaggerated competitiveness, a lack of industrial vision for a sector that in the rest of Europe continues to be an activator of the digital transition! The reduction, which clearly welcomed the concern and rather critical tone because it is about almost 20% of the workforce in Vodafone Italia, industry unions in Italy say.

As noted by Reuters, the reduction in Vodafone Italia is part of Vodafone's global strategy, with which the operator seeks to contain costs through restructuring, which essentially provides for staff reductions. In November 2022, Vodafone announced its intention to launch a cost containment plan aimed at overcoming negative market prospects.[1]
