Biography

1976-2024

Alexander Popov was born on April 15, 1976 in the city of Anzhero-Sudzhensk, Kemerovo Region. He graduated from Kuzbass State Technical University with a degree in Economics and Management at the Enterprise in Construction. In 2006-2007, he worked as the capital construction director of Kuzbassugol, after which he moved to the post of director of logistics at Vorkutaugol. From 2009 to 2011, he headed the Vorkutinsky Transport Enterprise of Vorkutaugol.

In 2011, Popov was appointed General Director of Olkon JSC (Olenegorsk Mining and Processing Plant, part of the mining division of Severstal Mining and Metallurgical Company). From 2016 to August 2018, he headed TKZ Krasny Kotelshchik OJSC (Power Machines Group of Companies). In September 2018, he moved to the post of general director of the Bystrinsky mining and processing plant (LLC GK Bystrinskoye, a subsidiary of PJSC MMC Norilsk Nickel). Since the spring of 2024, he served as senior vice president - operating director of Norilsk Nickel. In addition, he was a member of the board of Norilsk Nickel.

2025: Appointment as CEO of Metalloinvest

On November 26, 2025, Alexander Popov was appointed to the post of CEO of the Russian company Metalloinvest, one of the world's leading producers of iron ore products. In this position, he replaced Oleg Krestinin, who headed the company since December 2023.

It is reported that Krestinin, after leaving the post of CEO of Metalloinvest, will focus on making strategic decisions on the board of directors of this company. Metalloinvest, the largest iron ore producer in Russia and the CIS, is 100% owned by YuSeM Metalloinvest LLC, which is part of USM Holdings (combines the assets of Alisher Usmanov and his partners).[1]
