2023: 8.5 years in prison for spreading the virus that stole 2.5 billion rubles

In mid-February 2023, it became known about the verdict to a resident of Ulyanovsk, Alexei Gulyaev, who, according to the investigation, was a member of the hacker group Lurk. He received a sentence of 8 years and 6 months in a general regime colony.

The Investigative Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia opened a criminal case against Gulyaev and other hackers, part 4 of Art. 159.6 of the Criminal Code of Russia (fraud in the field of computer information committed by an organized group on an especially large scale) and part 1, part 2 of Art. 210 of the Criminal Code of Russia (organization of a criminal community or participation in it).

According to the investigation, the convict distributed a Trojan program that infected banking systems. With its help, funds were stolen from the accounts of bank customers. Cyber ​ ​ artists managed to steal more than 2.5 billion rubles, but they were able to cash out only 1.2 million rubles. 36-year-old Alexei Gulyaev in this laughter provided the technical side of the matter. He kept the server and software running, which the kidnappers used to transfer money. All computer equipment, bank cards and payment documents were seized and used as evidence against the man.

In 2016, the website of the Leninsky District Court of Ulyanovsk reported that the hacker organized crime group included members from different Russian regions, only about 50 people, 18 of whom were detained at that time. The so-called "brain center" of the organized criminal group was located in Krasnodar. It was reported that in 2015, using a malicious computer program, fraudsters from banks of Metallinvestbank, Taatta, and Garant-Invest Design Bureau managed to withdraw a huge amount to controlled accounts. It was also noted that other financial organizations could have been victims of the hacker attack.[1]
