2024: Arrest in Italy
In mid-June 2024, Право.ру co-founder Dmitry Chirakadze was arrested in Italy. According to ANSA, the detention took place as part of an investigation into the escape of Artyom Uss, the son of the former governor of the Krasnoyarsk Territory, Alexander Uss, from house arrest.
According to the agency, 54-year-old Chirakadze was detained at Rome's Fiumicino airport. The Italian prosecutor's office claims that he was involved in organizing the escape of Artem Uss. According to the investigation, Chirakadze followed the proceedings in the Milan Court of Appeal on the extradition of Uss to the United States and participated in preparatory meetings with members of the group that ensured the escape.
According to the prosecutor's office, the data from Chirakadze's phone and his movement on the territory of Italy coincide with the places of meetings related to the preparation of the escape. The lists of airline passengers were analyzed, which made it possible to establish its presence in various Italian and foreign cities.
The statement of the prosecutor's office also states that an arrest warrant was also issued for Chirakadze's wife. Her name is not called, but it is known that she, together with the family of Artem Uss, owns the shares of an elite tourist site in Sardinia. In addition, she owns a hunting farm in the Krasnoyarsk Territory, which was visited by high-ranking Russian officials.
According to the newspaper, earlier in the Uss case, five more alleged participants were arrested. Among them are 39-year-old Slovenian citizen Mate Janezic, 51-year-old Vladimir Jovancic from Bosnia and Herzegovina and his 26-year-old son Boris. Three of them have already been transferred to Italy.
According to Kommersant, in the United States, Artem Uss is accused of violating the sanctions regime and money laundering. An Italian court approved his extradition to the United States and placed him under house arrest. However, in March 2023, Uss fled, and in April of that year announced his stay in Russia. In December 2023, the US State Department announced a $7 million reward for information about his whereabouts. Uss has said his prosecution is politically motivated.[1]
